Marriage, Religion and State

  • Separation of Marriage and State: The state will not administer religious marriages. It will recognize a civil partnership contract governing rights and obligations, including property, inheritance, child custody, and related matters.
  • Religious Documentation: Couples may hold a religious ceremony of their choosing in any community. The community may issue a certificate documenting the ceremony, and the state will record that status in the population registry for purposes of international administrative recognition, without the state itself officiating the marriage.
  • Dissolution of the Partnership: If the partnership is dissolved, civil courts will adjudicate disputes exclusively according to the terms of the signed contract and the laws of the state. Religious courts will not be recognized as judicial tribunals.
